The 1970's were the heyday of Black Drama, and Black Drama Anthology presents 23 of some of the best from this period. Amiri Baraka, Ed Bullins, Langston Hughes and Ron Milner are all included here. "A Medal for Willie" by William Branch is outstanding. Here is a quote from a dialogue between a General sent to award a medal to a dead soldier's mother, and the Mayor of the town:"Well, we think highly of our Negras down here, and we want to show 'em all the credit they're due. But then, of course, we pretty much like things the way they are here in our little city and it wouldn't do if--er, we encouraged the Negras too much."
A Medal For Willie was written in 1951, and it doesn't seem as if things have changed that much in 64 years, despite our general feeling that we're now living in a "post-racial" society. This anthology is a powerful call for justice and equality, as well as a protest at our failures as a country to live up to our Founder's ideals of liberty and justice for all. If you like this book, try Black Theater as well. The books may be old but the issues are as current as today's headlines.
