Where do I begin?? So many awesome things about this story!
Mary Chase: fierce warrior woman. I loved when Mary was introduced in the previous book(s), because she was the "ride or die" assistant that did not ask questions and did what she was told without hesitation, because she believed in the cause, and was taught early on that emotions had little place in the dark world they live in.
Jack Talent: cold-hearted assassin. When Jack was introduced, you are immediately drawn to his character, just because you know there's an amazing back story there and so many unexplored emotions. He is a very dark character, but has a huge heart and is fiercely loyal.
The interactions between Mary and Jack are the best! Very tense, very controlled and still somehow very deep. They hate each other... Not a petulant, pigtail-pulling, hate, but like a bone-deep hate. Their interactions with each other are completely intense and I find myself on the edge of my seat just waiting for the next one. I loved how their relationship developed. It was a slow build from enemies, to partners, to friends, then finally, FINALLY, lovers. And all the while there are constantly new dimensions to their relationship that are being peeled back and explored.
There was no rush with this story. Mrs. Callihan definitely took her time with these characters which is much appreciated. The plot is constantly engaging as they work on the case, getting deeper and adding more twists. The final resolution, and the revelations along the way, were amazingly well thought out. The running theme of trust, not only in each other but also in themselves, came to a head and panned out beautifully. Very good introduction of Holly and Will.
I could honestly go on for hours about this book. I just really loved and appreciated these characters, they are by far my favorite ever, and I knew it from the moment I met them. Mary gets to discover and show emotions that no one thinks she has, and find her self worth and confidence. Jack gets to do some healing, (and a lot of killing!) and gets to feel what its like to truly know that he is loved and worthy by family and friends, despite his past and current predicaments. They are both thought cold, but nothing could be further from the truth. This is a phenomenal series, and I can't wait to read more and more and more!

Shadowdance Darkest London Kristen Callihan 9781455520817 Books Reviews

This story had in it everything that I love about Kristen Callihan’s writings--from the wonderfully smoggy Victorian London setting, to chases through the streets with a Ripper-style killer looming in the background, to the delicious interweaving of paranormal with Mary being able to leave her body as a ghost and Jack with his shifter abilities, and, of course, the romance that grows over the course of the book. And with Jack and Mary, the audience had seen the two in previous installments, so we already knew to expect the antagonism with the promise of winning hearts through a fight of wills. And it was beautiful to see it in action, expertly penned. Though it did seem like some of what made Jack special in Moonglow (Book #2), had been lost as his character morphed into the standard leading man copy of Archer (which was what I said of Winston, too, in Winterblaze).

Mary was a more than capable heroine, who could easily keep up with the male characters without hindrance by her frilled skirts, while still being rather naïve in her personality. Jack was infinitely harder to love with his rough manners, callous, selfish attitude, blind hunger for vengeance, and insistence on shoving everyone away. But there was that wounded shell and snarky attitude that still draws a reader in.

I did love that the story finally went into full detail on the innerworkings of a GIM and what they exactly were, after having it dangled in front of us in so many of the previous books as just side characters. And I also loved, loved the glimpses of previous characters and how they are progressing in their own respective lives. I do hope we eventually get an installment (or at least a novella) centered on the intriguing Lucien.

Lovely work, as usual, and I hope for many more in this series to come!
I really enjoyed this book, as I’ve enjoyed the other books in the series. But I can’t help but wish that there had been a point where Poppy confronted Talent with the knowledge of what he has done, and let him know that she understands. I think it would have been an amazing turn for everyone. I can’t wait to read about Holly and Will!
I will be honest - I started this series a bit reluctantly - I as a rule only read historical romance. Occasionally, I will read a historical romance with paranormal undertones. This series is set in Victorian England, but is heavy on the paranormal. I wasn't sure if I would like it or not - but OMG! I love this series!!! Each book I have read is better than the last!

Jack and Mary have been secondary characters throughout the series and I enjoyed the banter between them and wondered at its origin. Well, now I know!

*****SPOILER WARNING!*****

I read another review in which the reviewer absolutely hated this book - they thought that Jack was a hypocrite and Mary was a doormat.

I could not disagree more - I don't like to give away the plot of a book - my reviews generally are just my own likes/dislikes in the book - I do not want to spoil another readers experience. But that review almost made me skip this book and I saw in the comments that other people decided to pass on the book based on that review.

I would like to clarify. MAJOR SPOILERS

1 - Jack did go to a prostitute - paid for by Ian - ONCE and he never slept with anyone else
2 - He never judged prostitutes - in fact he said he understood the need to make coin - his disgust was with the men who used the women.
3 - He NEVER called Mary a whore or anything remotely close to that. He was nasty to her - but with a reason
4 - Mary was not a doormat - when she found out why Jack was treating her the way he did - she walked out on him, only returning when she finally got the whole story.

I would urge people to give the book a chance - if you hate it - return it. But, if you have enjoyed this series as much as I have - you most definitely DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS BOOK!!!
