this was a really good book. Poor Cassie and the things she went through 'being raised' by her horrible hateful guardian who later married her.And then to be 'forced' to marry one of the numerous men at Griff's funeral. Then there is Wade who thinks she belongs to him.
Cassie & Red get to know one another as she learns that she can speak her mind. And then there are those who become her friends. So much that also includes adventure with some dangers. {You also read about Belle & her story will continue in Book 2 but you could probably read each individually.} I purchased book 1 & 2 after I realized I had already read Book 3 but will probably read it again.

Physical and verbal abuse triggers
Entertaining. Historical western stand-alone that is easy to follow. Some violence, no drag-you-down drama.
Interesting storyline with descriptive writing. The reader is drawn into the various scenes and can feel the emotions of those involved.
Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and occasionally snarky dialogue.
No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.
This book is a little heavier story than others I've read by this author. But, I thought this story was great! Full of redemption, humor, and complex, multi-faceted characters. I thought she did the best with China doll, explaining the layers of what goes on in a woman's mind and psyche who is abused. Sweet Carrie, godly Red, lots of brokenness in the wicked, and a full cast of townsfolk round out this story! Hoping the Husband Tree brings good things for Belle! Mary Connealy doesn't disappoint!
It is a well developed story with the happy ending at the end feeling earned. Both characters are naive toward how a marriage is supposed to work which was enjoyable to experience. It was fun flipping between the two different perspectives see what each thought about the other. With that it was interesting to be in the head of a women who was clearly in an abusive relationship with her dead husband and see her slowly break free from that thought process.
Mild spoiler;
It has the pair in danger as the climax trope but it is resolved in an unexpected way that was quite satisfying
While this is the second book I've read by Mary Connealy, it's actually the first in the series. That doesn't seem to matter, though, as I believe they can be read independently from one another. This is definitely a new favorite author of mine! Squeaky clean, great characters, strong, feisty lead women and lead men who value the strength and skills their wives bring to the partnership of marriage. These are not sappy or silly tales. The writing is rich enough to develop the scene in your imagination and the plots aren't contrived and over simplified or common. I'm on my third book and will be looking for more from Mary Connealy. If you like your literature clean and your characters real, you'll want to read this book.
Storyline was very interesting! Sexual content handled without discribing every detail, very well written. No swear or bad language that was offensive. Interesting characters that were quite believable. Maybe Red was little too good. That he wanted Cassie to sass him was very strange. My only real criticism was we can only come in faith in God through Jesus shed blood on the cross. It stated our need, we are sinners, Jesus said, ,,no man cometh unto the Father but by Me. 1Peter 318 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust that He might bring us to God.
I grew up reading westerns, and every now and then I like to read one for old time's sake. I'm also a sucker for marriage of convenience stories, so the combination enticed me as soon as I read this book's description. A pregnant woman is widowed one day and married the next? I wanted to find out more.
Cassie Griffin has never been allowed to have a thought in her head that wasn't placed there by someone else, and usually by her newly deceased husband. Griff is no sooner in the ground than she is literally circled by men wanting to marry her, as women are scarce on the Montana prairie and Cassie is as pretty as they come. Seeing her hand will be forced to choose one of these men, Cassie chooses the one who makes her skin crawl the least, and immediately sets to learning how to do everything exactly the way he wants.
Red Dawson has always thought Cassie was a beautiful woman, but he didn't want to marry her. Not with her reputation of being quite spoiled, or with her questionable belief in the God that Red serves. But when he saw her surrounded by men who would never consider her best interests, Red threw his hat into the marriage market and wound up hitched to the lovely and naive young woman. He finds Cassie eager to help but almost comically helpless. She's not spoiled, she's just never been allowed to do anything or think anything or say anything that wasn't approved by someone else. He begins trying to teach her that as she is safe in his care, she is free to learn how to be herself instead of the image that was always thrust upon her in the past.
This book takes quite an effective look at what it is like to come out from a controlling situation and the challenges one faces with that. The writing style was simplistic, and I wondered if that was done to reflect the way Cassie's thinking had been molded. However, the simplicity worked against it for me as a reader because everyone's motives were so obvious and overstated that it wasn't nuanced at all. There were two side plots that also disturbed me - one about Cassie's lack of knowledge about the intimacies of marriage and birthing babies, and the other was danger from a local rancher who was obsessed with Cassie and who stalked the Dawsons' cabin looking for an opportunity to kill Red and take Cassie for himself. Since most of the book was written so simply that a child could read it, those felt way too adult and overplayed. I would only recommend this book to those above age 16.
I never felt invested personally in the characters, although I was thoroughly intrigued by minor character Belle Tanner Santoni and I'm in the middle of her book now. Stay tuned for that review in another week or so.
